In Japan

You should check through the following pages to make sure that you have all the information you need for getting around in Japan once you arrive. Please feel free to let us know of any extra notes that you think would be useful to travellers and students in Japan.

Regions

At present, just a list of the prefectures and a map. This will be developed as we have time and when the database is largely finished. There are plenty of travel guides on the web or buy one of the many books regarding Japan (the usual travel book companies all produce reasonable guides to the major locations in Japan).

Transport

Getting around in Japan is fairly easy, even if not cheap. There are always several options for getting anywhere, and you can usually save money by taking a slower route - either you can be there quickly, or you can be there cheaply, but there are not many ways of being there quickly and cheaply. Unfortunately. Check the transport page for details.

Legalities

Once you arrive in Japan, there are a few legalities that you need to go through. These will depend on the length of your stay, but the most important (for those staying over 3 months) is Alien Registration. Make sure you get this completed or you will be staying illegally, and could be deported if found without a legal Alien Registration card.

Accommodation

Accommodation likewise comes in many forms and at many prices. The cheapest options are usually youth hostels, but not always - there are also plenty of other types available. Check the accommodation page for details, as if you are travelling around in Japan, you can have a far more interesting experience by choosing your accommodation well. If you are staying long-term in Japan, you will need to consider your housing options carefully as this will be one of your greatest expenses.

Work

A brief introduction to work since so many people ask. This is all the information that we can offer you: if you have any comments, experiences to add, please let us know. Please note that we provide information about studying in Japan, not working here.

Telephones/Internet

Keeping in touch with people from Japan, or keeping in touch with people in Japan - dialing codes, internet access, time differences, the works.
